Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab is about 90–100 km, a drive of roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes on the road north through the South Sinai mountains. The most comfortable way to go is a private transfer from your hotel door; intercity buses and shared taxis cost less but run on their schedule, not yours. Dahab works well as a day trip, but one night lets you see its best side — the evening on the promenade.
The route from Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab
The road leaves Sharm heading north, past the airport and the turn-off for Nabq, and then turns inland. For most of the journey you drive through wide wadis (desert valleys) between rugged granite mountains, with very few buildings along the way. Towards the end the road drops down to the Gulf of Aqaba, and Dahab appears on the coast below.
It’s one main road, used every day by tourist vehicles, locals and trucks, and there isn’t a real alternative route. The early-morning light on the mountains is beautiful, and a private driver can pull over at a safe spot if you want photos.
Checkpoints and passports on the Sharm to Dahab road
Like every road trip across Sinai, the drive passes security checkpoints. They’re routine: the car slows or stops, an officer may look at the passengers and ask for passports, and you carry on. Every traveller, children included, should have their passport with them — in a day bag on your lap, not in a suitcase in the back.
Tip: If your passport lives in the hotel safe, take it out the night before. It’s the easiest thing to forget on an early start.

Private transfer
A private Sharm to Dahab transfer picks you up at your hotel, drives you straight to your Dahab hotel, dive centre or camp, and leaves when you’re ready. It’s the obvious choice with children, lots of luggage or dive equipment, or a group that would otherwise need several bus tickets plus taxis at both ends.
You can also go directly from the airport. SSH sits on the north side of Sharm, already on the way to Dahab, so there’s no need to stop in town first — our Sharm airport arrival guide explains how the meet and greet works.
Intercity bus
Buses run between Sharm and Dahab, but they leave from the bus station rather than your hotel, so you’ll need a taxi to the station and another one at the other end. Timetables change with the season, so check departure times locally a day ahead. It works for a solo traveller with a backpack and a flexible day.
Shared taxi or microbus
Shared microbuses usually leave when they fill up rather than at fixed times. They’re used mostly by locals and backpackers; luggage space is tight, and you can’t plan your day around them with any certainty.
A day out with a private driver
Some visitors join a group day tour to Dahab. If you’d rather keep your own pace, book a private driver for the day instead: you decide the stops — the Blue Hole in the morning, lunch by the water, shopping on the promenade — and head back when you’ve had enough.
What to do in Dahab in a day
Dahab is the opposite of Sharm’s big resorts: low buildings, cafés with floor cushions by the water, and nobody in a hurry. With one day, these are the four places to see.
The Blue Hole
A short drive north of town, the Blue Hole is Dahab’s most famous sight — a deep, dark-blue sinkhole in the reef just off the shore. On a calm day snorkelers can float along the reef edge and look down into the blue. Deep diving here is serious and strictly for experienced, certified divers; if you’re new to the sea, snorkel only. Simple cafés along the shore offer shade and lunch.
The Lighthouse reef
Right in town at the northern end of the seafront, the Lighthouse is an easy shore entry onto a sloping reef, popular for snorkeling and first dives. It’s the place for a swim if you skip the Blue Hole.
The Lagoon
At the southern end of Dahab, the Lagoon is a sheltered, shallow bay known for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Even if you don’t ride, it’s a good place to sit and watch the sails on a breezy afternoon.
The promenade
Dahab’s waterfront promenade runs along the bay, lined with cafés, small restaurants, dive shops and souvenir stalls. Late afternoon into sunset is the best time: take a seat facing the water and watch the mountains across the gulf catch the evening light.
A simple one-day plan
- Leave your Sharm hotel after breakfast, typically around 8:00–8:30.
- Snorkel at the Blue Hole in the morning, before the afternoon breeze.
- Lunch by the water in town.
- Swim at the Lighthouse, or wander down to the Lagoon.
- Sunset on the promenade, then the drive back to Sharm.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is easy: with about 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 on the road each way, you still get 6–7 relaxed hours in Dahab. Stay overnight if:
- you want Dahab’s evenings and a quiet sunrise over the gulf,
- you’re diving on more than one day,
- you plan to carry on north — the roads to Nuweiba and Taba continue past Dahab.
For an overnight stay, book two one-way transfers: one out, and one back on the day and time that suit you. If you’re heading further, see our routes to Nuweiba and Taba.
Practical tips for the trip
- Passports for everyone, every time.
- Cash: smaller cafés and shops in Dahab may prefer cash, so carry some Egyptian pounds.
- Your own mask and snorkel fit better than borrowed ones, and reef shoes help at shore entries.
- Reef manners: don’t touch or stand on coral, use reef-safe sunscreen, and wear fins only where they’re allowed.
- Winter evenings can be cool and breezy, so bring a light jacket from December to February.
Tip: In summer, leave early. The Blue Hole is far more pleasant before the midday heat, and the drive back in the late afternoon is cooler too.
