Granite mountains of South Sinai in early morning light

Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo by road is about 500 km and usually takes 6–7 hours: up the Sinai coast of the Gulf of Suez, under the Suez Canal through the tunnel north of Suez city, then west across the desert into Cairo. A private Sharm to Cairo transfer turns it into a door-to-door trip on your own timing, with room for all your luggage. Flying is quicker for a solo traveller in a hurry, so below we’re honest about when each option wins.

The route from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo by road

From Sharm, the road heads north-west along the western side of Sinai, with the Gulf of Suez on your left and mountains on your right for much of the way. In order, the journey looks like this:

  1. Sharm El Sheikh to El Tor — out of the resort and up the coast to the capital of South Sinai.
  2. El Tor to Ras Sudr — a long, straight stretch between the sea and the mountains.
  3. The Suez Canal crossing — you pass under the canal through the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, north of Suez city, crossing from Asia into Africa without seeing the water.
  4. The desert highway to Cairo — the road runs west and reaches the eastern side of Cairo first, near the airport and New Cairo, before the city centre and Giza.

There are fuel stations with cafés and toilets along the way, and we stop whenever you need to stretch your legs.

Checkpoints: keep your passport handy

There are several security checkpoints between Sharm and Cairo, and the area around the canal crossing is usually the busiest. Every passenger, children included, needs their passport. Keep them in a bag inside the car, not packed in a suitcase. Stops are usually quick, and your driver does the talking.

Tip: Take a photo of every passport’s photo page on your phone as a backup, and keep the originals together in one pouch so you can hand them over in seconds.

When the road beats flying

The flight from Sharm to Cairo is short, at around an hour in the air. Door to door, though, the gap is smaller than it looks: you still need a transfer to SSH, time at the airport before departure, the wait for bags in Cairo, and a drive across a busy city at the other end. The road wins when:

  • You’re a family or a group. One vehicle carries everyone together. Compare a single transfer quote with a plane ticket for each person.
  • You have lots of luggage. No baggage allowance and no excess fees — dive gear, strollers, golf bags and souvenirs all fit in a Toyota Hiace-style minivan.
  • Your timing is flexible or awkward. You leave when it suits you, with no check-in queue and no fixed flight schedule.
  • You want door to door. From your Sharm hotel lobby to your Cairo hotel, or straight to the pyramids area in Giza.
  • You want to see the country. The Sinai coastline and the canal crossing are part of the trip.

When flying is the better choice

We’d rather you pick the right option than book a drive you’ll regret. Fly instead if:

  • you’re travelling alone or as a couple with light bags and a tight schedule — the flight saves several hours,
  • 6–7 hours in a car is hard for you because of back problems, car sickness or a baby who hates the car seat,
  • you have a same-day international connection in Cairo with little margin,
  • a convenient flight is available at a fare that works for one or two people.

Leave early: timing your departure

Most guests leave Sharm early, usually around 6:00–7:00, to reach Cairo in the early-to-mid afternoon. That keeps the whole drive in daylight and gets you into the city before the evening rush, when Cairo traffic can add a lot of time to the last few kilometres. Ask your hotel for a breakfast box the night before; many can prepare one for early departures.

Where we drop you in Cairo

Cairo International Airport

The airport is on the eastern side of the city, so it’s one of the first big stops when you come in from Suez. If you’re catching an international flight the same day, aim to reach the terminal at least 3 hours before departure, and build a generous buffer on top of the 6–7 hour drive for checkpoints and traffic.

Downtown, Zamalek and the Nile hotels

Central hotels are reached after crossing part of the city. Traffic varies a lot by time of day, which is one more reason to start early from Sharm.

Giza and the pyramids

Giza is on the far western side of Cairo, so getting there means crossing the whole city. Budget extra time, especially in the late afternoon. Many travellers choose a hotel near the pyramids so they can start sightseeing early the next morning.

Whatever your destination, send us the exact hotel name or address in advance so the driver can plan the final stretch.

What to pack for a 6–7 hour drive

  • Passports for everyone, in your day bag.
  • Water and snacks, even though the car is air-conditioned.
  • A phone charger or power bank.
  • A light layer — air-conditioning feels cold on a long drive.
  • Motion-sickness tablets if anyone in the family needs them.
  • Downloaded films, games or audiobooks for children.
  • Small Egyptian pound notes for coffee, rest-stop toilets and tips.
  • Tissues and hand sanitiser.

Tip: Put everything you’ll need during the drive into one small bag that stays with you. Once the suitcases are loaded, you won’t want to unpack at a checkpoint.
