Taba sits at the top of the Gulf of Aqaba, in the north-eastern corner of Sinai. Most people heading there from Sharm are doing one of three things: checking in at a Taba Heights resort, staying near Taba town, or reaching the Taba border crossing. Whichever it is, the drive is long enough that comfort and timing really matter — which is exactly what a private Sharm El Sheikh to Taba transfer is for.
Sharm El Sheikh to Taba: distance and route
| Detail | Sharm El Sheikh → Taba |
|---|---|
| Distance | about 230–240 km |
| Drive time | roughly 3–3.5 hours |
| Route | via Dahab and Nuweiba, then north along the coast |
| Checkpoints | yes, passport needed |
The first part follows the mountain road toward Dahab, through granite peaks and sandy valleys. From there the road continues to Nuweiba, and the final stretch hugs the Gulf of Aqaba, with the sea on your right and mountains on your left — the most scenic part of the trip, with the far shore of the gulf visible across the water. Close to Taba, look out for Pharaoh’s Island and its Salah El Din citadel just offshore, and ask the driver for a photo stop.
Security checkpoints along the route are routine. Keep passports in your hand luggage, not packed away in a suitcase.
Taba Heights or the Taba border crossing?
Taba Heights is a resort area on the coast a little before Taba itself, so it’s slightly quicker to reach from Sharm. We drop you at your hotel’s door.
The Taba border crossing is at the northern end of the road. If you’re crossing, check the current entry rules for your nationality before you travel and give yourself plenty of time for formalities. Tell us what time you want to reach the crossing and we’ll work backwards to set your pick-up time in Sharm.
Private transfer vs bus vs shared taxi to Taba
- Bus: the budget choice. Departures follow a fixed timetable and stop at stations rather than hotels, so check the current schedule locally and plan the last leg yourself.
- Shared taxi: cheaper than a private car, but you wait for it to fill, share it with other passengers and have less luggage space on a drive of three hours or more.
- Private transfer: leaves at your time, goes straight to your resort or the crossing and stops when you ask. Over 3–3.5 hours, being able to stretch your legs and control the schedule is worth a lot, especially when you have a border to reach.
Tips for the drive
- Start early if you’re heading to the border, so you arrive in daylight with time to spare.
- Bring water and snacks for the road.
- Want to split the journey? Stop for lunch in Dahab or a break in Nuweiba; on a private transfer it’s up to you.
- Just landed? Our Sharm El Sheikh airport transfer meet & greet can take you straight from SSH arrivals to Taba Heights.
One-way, return and day trips
Taba is usually booked one-way, or as a return transfer with the date of the trip back set in advance. A same-day round trip from Sharm is possible, but with 6–7 hours of driving in total it makes for a very long day, and a night in Taba is far more comfortable. For a shorter Sinai outing, consider Dahab or Nuweiba, and if you need a driver for several hours, see our private driver service.
