Horse riding in Sharm El Sheikh: why Nabq
The Nabq Protected Area lies north of the airport and feels a world away from the resort strip: mangroves, low dunes and a long, open beach with the Red Sea on one side and the mountains of Sinai on the other. It is quieter here, with more sand, water and sky than buildings. Horseback riding on the beach is also one of the most-reviewed trips on our site.
How the ride typically runs
- Hotel pick-up. Guests in Nabq Bay have the shortest drive; from Naama Bay, Old Market or Hadaba, allow more time in the car.
- Meet the horses. Tell us your riding experience when you book so the stable can pick suitable horses.
- Mounting and a short briefing on holding the reins, stopping and keeping your distance from the horse in front.
- Along the beach at walking pace, with the guide setting the speed. Experienced riders can ask about a faster stretch; the guide decides based on the group and the ground.
- Swim with the horses when the sea is calm enough, so wear swimwear under your clothes.
- Back to the stable and drop-off at your hotel.
Sunset or daytime?
Sunset is the most popular time for horse riding in Sharm, and for good reason: soft golden light, cooler air and long shadows on the sand. In summer they are also the most comfortable time to be out, for you and for the horses. Morning rides suit families with young children who tire later in the day, and from December to February a daytime ride is pleasant at around 21–25°C.
Who it suits
- Beginners and nervous riders. Let us know in advance so the guide can plan a gentle pace.
- Experienced riders looking for a different setting from the usual stable trail.
- Couples who want a quiet sunset activity.
- Children, with age, height and weight limits set by the stable. Mido confirms them on WhatsApp.
Tips from a local
- Wear long, soft trousers such as leggings or light cotton trousers. Shorts rub against the saddle.
- Closed shoes or trainers are best; flip-flops slip out of the stirrups.
- Swimwear underneath if you hope to swim with the horses, plus a towel and dry clothes in a bag.
- Keep your phone on a strap or in a zipped pocket. You need your hands for the reins, so ask the guide to take a photo for you at a stop.
- Follow the guide closely in the water. Horses move differently when they swim, so let the guide tell you how to sit and when to hold on.
- Bring a light jacket for winter sunsets. The temperature falls quickly once the sun goes down.
Combine it with other trips
Riding at Nabq pairs well with a desert day: the desert safari by quad or buggy shows the mountain side of Sinai, while the family buggy safari suits younger children. For a bird’s-eye view of the same coast, try parasailing. Still deciding where to stay? Our guide to where to stay in Sharm El Sheikh explains what Nabq Bay and the other areas are like.
