Why go parasailing in Sharm El Sheikh
From the beach, the Red Sea simply looks blue. From the air, you see what makes this coast special: the pale turquoise strip over the shallow reef, darker patches of coral, the clear line where the reef drops away into deep water, and the bare Sinai mountains rising behind the hotels. It is the best overview of Sharm you can get without boarding a plane.
It is also surprisingly peaceful up there. Once the line is let out, the engine noise fades and you mostly hear the wind: a thrill on take-off, then calm once you are up.
How a flight typically works
- Pick-up from your hotel, if you’ve asked for a transfer.
- Briefing and harness. The crew fits your harness and explains what happens on take-off and landing.
- Out on the water. The boat heads to the flying area.
- Up you go. The boat picks up speed, the canopy fills and the line lets you out until the beach looks tiny.
- About 15–20 minutes in the air, then the crew brings you back in.
- Back to your hotel, or straight on to your next activity.
Solo or tandem?
Flying solo is the standard option. A tandem flight, with two people side by side, suits couples, a parent with an older child, or anyone who feels braver with company. Tandem is available on request. Weight limits for one or two riders are set by the operator and depend on the wind on the day, so Mido confirms the details on WhatsApp before you go.
Who parasailing suits
- First-timers who want a thrill without needing any skill: you simply sit back in the harness.
- Photographers and anyone who loves a view.
- Couples marking a birthday, an anniversary or a honeymoon.
- People who are a little nervous about heights. The climb is gradual and you sit in the harness rather than dangle; if you’re unsure, start with a tandem.
Tips from a local
- Wind decides. Parasailing needs suitable wind and sea. If conditions aren’t safe, the crew won’t fly, and Mido will help you move to another slot. Winter brings the occasional windy day, so don’t leave your flight until the last morning of your holiday.
- Think twice about your phone. Only take it up in a strapped waterproof case, and ask the crew first. Anything dropped from that height is gone for good.
- Dress simply: swimwear or light clothes that can get splashed, and sunglasses on a strap. Leave loose hats on the boat.
- Pick your light. Mornings tend to be clearer for photos; late afternoon gives warmer colours on the mountains.
Pair it with other water sports
Parasailing is short, so it combines easily. The banana boat and sofa tube is the classic group follow-up. If the view of the reef from above makes you curious, an introductory shore dive or the full-day Ras Mohammed and White Island boat trip takes you right into it.
